1. The Origins of Winemaking

Tbilisi Wine Museum, Georgia. Some of the jars feature a grape motif around the rim.

The origins of winemaking date back to 8,000 years ago in present-day Georgia, a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. As the birthplace of winemaking, Georgia boasts over 500 indigenous grape varieties, representing roughly one-sixth of the world’s total. Its vineyards include endangered vines found nowhere else on earth.

In the Fertile Crescent, spanning Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, humans transitioned from hunting and gathering to farming and settlements during Neolithic times. They learned to domesticate plants and animals, developed crafts like pottery and weaving, and made polished stone tools. They also began cultivating grapes, enhancing their yield and quality. The grape vine from this region is the ancestor of over 10,000 wine grapes used today.

The discovery of ancient wine jars in Georgia highlights the country’s rich winemaking heritage. The many indigenous grape varieties suggest a long history of grape cultivation and crossbreeding. This enduring tradition reflects Georgia’s cultural heritage and innovation, showcasing their commitment to evolving and enhancing this ancient craft.

The ancient Georgian traditional Qvevri wine-making method – The Qvevri is an egg-shaped earthenware vessel used for making, aging, and storing wine. In the wine-making process, grapes are pressed, and the juice, along with grape skins, stalks, and pips, is poured into the Qvevri. This vessel is then sealed and buried in the ground, allowing the wine to ferment for five to six months before it is ready to be enjoyed.

Duck Walk Vineyards – Duck Walk Vineyards spans 140 scenic acres and produces 5,000 cases of wine annually. Their wines, recognized for excellence in national competitions, include Vidal Ice Wine, made from grapes frozen on the vine, Blueberry Port from wild Maine blueberries, and unique Pinot Meunier. They strive to create distinctive and exceptional wines. They remain a family business, ensuring a personal touch in every detail.

Harbes Vineyards – The Harbes family has farmed for 13 generations, starting in Western Europe and relocating to Long Island in the 1920s. Originally farming in Hempstead, they moved to Long Island’s rural North Fork in the 1960s after the Long Island Expressway was built through their farm. Since then, they have continued farming in Mattituck, bringing their agricultural heritage to new, fertile soils.

Osprey’s Dominion Vineyards – Osprey’s Dominion Vineyards grows 90 acres of vinifera grapes under the watchful eye of the soaring Osprey. Their location, at the same latitude as France’s great wine regions, is ideal. Being surrounded yet sheltered by Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay, combined with our complex soil, significantly enhances their grape quality and wine character.

Palmer Vineyards – In 1983, Robert Palmer envisioned a thriving vineyard on Long Island’s North Fork. Today, Palmer Vineyards, now owned by the Massoud Family, is a well-known estate winery. The vineyard and its wines have received numerous accolades, reflecting Palmer’s commitment to quality. “I have to set the standards high,” said Bob, “my name is on every bottle.”

Pellegrini Vineyards – Bob and Joyce Pellegrini were pioneers in Long Island’s wine community. In 1991, they purchased their vineyard and built a 14,000-square-foot winery. The winery features a striking two-story tasting room, a trellised walkway, and a modern production facility. Visitors can watch the winemaking process and enjoy a private tasting area with panoramic views. This facility combines modern winemaking technology with Old World traditions.

Pindar Vineyards – The family-run Pindar Vineyards produces a wide variety of wines, from bold red blends to steel-fermented whites. They pride themselves on offering personal, first-class service to their guests. Their goal is to help everyone find a favorite wine. Family, inspiration, tradition, and innovation define Pindar Vineyards, creating a unique and welcoming experience for all.

Hudson Valley Locations:

Brotherhood Winery – The true history of Brotherhood Winery has confused many people for years. Is it really the oldest winery in the United States? In “The Story of Brotherhood,” Robert Bedford clarifies this and explores the winery’s remarkable past. The book celebrates nearly 175 years of captivating history, honoring the owners and stakeholders who ensured the winery’s longevity through loyalty, perseverance, innovation, and imagination. In 2000, Brotherhood Winery was designated a historic landmark and added to the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Millbrook Vineyards & Winery – Millbrook Vineyards & Winery was the first vineyard in the Hudson River Region dedicated to vinifera grapes. Its founding principles are viticulture, innovation, and excellence in winemaking. The vineyard spans 30 acres, growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Tocai Friulano. The winery opened for tours and tastings in 1988 and now produces 10-15,000 cases of wine annually. We’ve received recognition from prestigious publications such as Wine Spectator, The New York Times, and Bon Appetit Magazine.

Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery – In 1990, Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery began growing apple trees. Today, they have one of the East Coast’s most diverse pick-your-own orchards, with over 65 apple varieties. In 1995, they hosted their first Bob Dylan Tribute Festival, leading to live music every weekend and multiple yearly festivals. By 2001, they became New York’s first craft distillery since Prohibition, making fruit brandies, liqueurs, and cordials under the name American Fruits. In 2012, they built the largest craft distillery on the East Coast, Black Dirt Distillery. Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery has a fanatical obsession with horticulture, culinary arts, spirits, wine, cider, apples, music, and fun. After nearly 30 years on this farm, they remain a close-knit group of family and friends, grateful for their loyal customers who return year after year.

City Winery – Step into urban wine country with City Winery. Each location blends the warmth of wine country with modern comfort and convenience. City Winery New York in Hudson River Park is one of Manhattan’s largest dining spaces, boasting over 32,000 square feet. The main room’s soaring ceilings create an open-air feel, and breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Barry Diller’s Little Island enhance the magical atmosphere. Additionally, a scenic riverfront patio offers outdoor dining. They believe in giving back and caring for the world by leveraging their resources for philanthropy, including space, wine, human capital, and energy.

Hi Cathy! I just wanted to thank you - we had a great trip! Students and teachers all had a blast. On another note I wanted to say how happy I was, in particular, with the bus company especially my driver Benitio. I have an infant at home that I am breast feeding. He gave me full range of his bus so that I could pump. He took his stuff and napped on one of the other guy's busses, showed me how to work the door and was very accommodating. The bus was perfect and everything we discussed was given to us. Our group had a beautiful time at the museum and the MLK memorial. Our tour guide Ms. Lynette was awesome.
